Kratom: An Emerging Substance of Abuse

Kratom, derived from a tropical tree native to Southeast Asia, has gained popularity recently for its stimulant and sedative properties. However it has potential for abuse and addiction.

Introduction to Kratom

Kratom, derived from a tropical tree native to Southeast Asia, has gained popularity recently for its stimulant and sedative properties. Marketed as a natural remedy for pain, anxiety, and opioid withdrawal, it is increasingly recognized for its potential for abuse and addiction.

Why is it addictive?

Kratom’s addictive nature lies in its active compounds, mitragynine and 7-hydroxymitragynine. These compounds interact with the brain’s opioid receptors, producing effects similar to opioids like morphine. At lower doses, kratom acts as a stimulant, increasing energy and alertness. At higher doses, it induces euphoria and sedation, leading to repeated use, escalating doses, and ultimately, addiction.

Factors Contributing to Kratom Abuse

Kratom’s rise as a substance of abuse is due to several factors. Its legal status in many regions makes it easily accessible, and it is sold in various forms, including capsules, powders, and extracts, both online and in physical stores. The perception of it as a “safe” and “natural” alternative to prescription medications has contributed to its popularity. However, the lack of regulation means these products can vary significantly in potency and purity, increasing the risk of adverse effects and addiction.

Accessibility and Marketing of Kratom

The widespread availability of kratom, found in gas stations, smoke shops, and online marketplaces, coupled with aggressive marketing tactics, has led to its use across diverse demographics. This accessibility raises concerns about the potential for widespread abuse and underscores the need for increased public awareness and regulatory measures.

Withdrawal Symptoms and Challenges

Withdrawal from kratom can be challenging, often resembling opioid withdrawal. Symptoms include muscle aches, joint pain, sweating, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, tremors, irritability, anxiety, depression, insomnia, intense cravings, and mood swings. These symptoms can be severe and may last for several days to weeks, depending on the level of dependency. The discomfort of withdrawal often drives individuals back to use, perpetuating the cycle of addiction.

The Importance of Professional Support

Understanding the risks of kratom is crucial as it emerges as a significant substance of abuse. If you or someone you know is struggling with kratom addiction, professional counseling and support are essential for recovery. Our team of experienced counselors provides the necessary guidance and treatment to help you overcome addiction and reclaim your life.
