Helping Clients With Other Addictions
In addition to treating drug and alcohol addiction we treat many other forms of addiction and compulsive behaviors as well mental health concerns.
As psychologists, licensed professional counselors, and licensed marital and family therapists we enjoy working with clients who present with a wide array of concerns and helping them to find improvement and recovery.
Mental Health Concerns
Concerns our clients come to us for help with include:
- depression
- anxiety
- stress
- relationship problems
Behavioral and Process Addictions
We also treat addictions that are more behavioral, also called process addictions. Liked gambling and eating disorders including binge eating disorder, anorexia, and bulimia.
Many of the the folks we see come for sex, love, or spending/shopping addictions as well.
While some professionals do not consider these behaviors to be illnesses, most clinicians refer to them as process addictions because there are particular patterns or processes to such behaviors which can be identified, challenged, supported, and replaced.
These behavioral addictions or process addictions have much in common with drug and alcohol addiction in that they affect the individual, their friends, partnerships, and family. They can be fueled by other mental health problems and they can cause other mental health problems and they can be very hard to change.
Treatment for Process Addictions
The treatment and recovery approaches for process addictions are very similar to treatment and recovery options for drug and alcohol addiction.
People tend to benefit at first from individual therapy. At a certain point it works well to incorporate other treatment options. These options can help you find meaning and purpose in your life.
- group therapy
- medication
- social support
- structure
